Carter G Woodson started Negro History Week. In 1976 it was expanded to Black History Month.
February 1989
Ronald H Brown was elected chairman of the Democratic National Committee. He was the first African American to head a major political party.
February 1995
Bernard Harris became the first black astronaut to walk in space.
